Award Winning Portrait Photograpy

This was such a cool experience and I am really glad I did it.

After attending a workshop in AZ, I was given a new perspective on submitting my artwork for awards.

In the past, I really had no interest in entering. That was until I began to understand how submitting and receiving feedback from the judges would be a great way to improve my craft and encourage me to be more creative with my shooting.

Having a team of top photographers and educators from around the world judging your images and helping you see your blind spots has proven to be an invaluable experience.

If you thought I was overly specific during a shoot before, watch out!

I've got a new level of standards I desire to meet and no unfinished feet or hands are going to stop me. IYKYK

I am really proud to have received bronze on all of the images I submitted.

A bronze award on an image scores 70-74 points demonstrating a professional standard of work.

Shield

Did you know that when crabs are in their molting stage they protect themselves from predators by staying concealed in a dark place?

They hide until their new shell is strong enough to create security around their vulnerable endoskeleton.

Isn’t it fascinating that these little crustaceans are able to intuitively know that they need time and space to become well-fortified once again?

While this process only takes 72 hours for a crab, it seems to be taking much longer for me during this particular season in life.

And, that’s okay.

I am willing to wait.

I know this process can not be rushed.

In times like this, when I am in need of protection from the ugly in the world and my personal triggers, I give myself permission to withdraw from people, places, and activities that could potentially derail my healing. I make sure to double down on the things that bring me joy and lean into spaces that support me in feeling safe and loved.

Most of the time I find that speaking with like-minded individuals who can relate and offer me space to express my feelings without judgment is really helpful.

I also find that helping other women feel seen, heard, safe, loved, and worthy through conversation and photography can be an antidote for me as well.

I feel much stronger with each day that passes when I honor my mind & body by listening to what it needs. This internal strength has allowed me to slowly emerge from the shadows and take a baby step courageously back toward the light.

Sending you lots of love if you are in the midst of growing a force field of your own.

Quiet

And suddenly everything, EVERYTHING is… quiet.

When all the world is ablaze and you can’t seem to find your footing.

Plant your feet firmly on the ground.

Feel the grass in between your toes.

Be still.

Be calm.

And stand tall.

Know that you are loved.

You are irreplaceable.

You are enough.

Shine your light.

As you sail straight into the eye of the storm.

Can't wait for tomorrow's reveal with this beauty!

Undone

I hope you dance...

A photoshoot is a vulnerable experience for many women.

This is why having a connection with your photographer is so important in order to create portraits that feel authentic.

For me, forming this type of connection and trust with a client is one of my biggest priorities.

A photographer can use top-of-the-line equipment in an incredible studio space, with the best hair and makeup team, couture-labeled clothing, using impeccable lighting techniques, BUT if you don't have a true connection with your client, it translates in their final images.

You can see it clear as day in their body language and their eyes.

I'm not looking to photograph women who are interested in this experience purely for vanity.

I create art with women who desire to FEEL deeply connected to the women staring back at them in their images.

This level of authenticity and freedom created in the studio with Christina could never have been possible without connection and trust being ever-present.

I am forever grateful and honored when a woman lets down their walls and welcomes me into their world.

Let's come undone together.

Healing

Healing is not becoming the best version of yourself.

Healing is about embracing all parts of yourself.

The good and the perceived unworthy.

It's about radical acceptance.

That's when we can start to truly heal.

Messy Middle

I had it all wrong.

Somewhere along the way, I believed I was close to figuring it all out.

That I had graduated from most of my internal challenges and that it was my time to lead and support other women in tackling theirs.

But when my old programming began to resurface, I started feeling like an imposter.

How could I possibly help others heal when I am still in need of healing too?

I’ve taken a step back and done some soul-searching about these feelings allowing me to unpack and rework what I already knew…

Having it all figured out is a mirage.

Continuous learning and growing have no expiration date.

Big feelings and riding on an emotional wave will always be a part of my personal journey.

Trial and error are imperative in discovering more about who I am.

Life is a series of never-ending undoing and acceptance.

As a woman who works with other women, this friendly reminder helped me rethink my feelings about worthiness.

I am human.

Never ahead, nor behind.

Just a deeply feeling human who's paying attention in a messy world trying to navigate and course correct as I go.

This simple yet powerful reminder allowed me to give myself grace and begin my ascension once again.

Relearning to accept it all for what it truly is; a gift.

To embrace the lessons inside of the messy middle.

Enriching my innate ability to connect deeply with others.

Allowing me to truly listen to and feel their desires.

To be a soft spot for them to land.

Creating a safe space for them to release their ego.

A place for them to tap into their feminine energy and show up as their authentic self.

This realization gave permission for me to accept that my value is not in being a leader, rather the value is being in the trenches alongside you.

To give you the session of your dreams, while supporting you in feeling both held and free, so together we can become undone and create something extraordinary with my camera.

I am indeed worthy.

In the eyes of the beholder...

How do you define success?

In my personal life, it's spending quality time with my family. Laughing and sharing our "rose and thorn" from the day at dinner and snuggling up close at night with a movie.

It's getting a report from my daughter's teachers telling us they are doing well in school academically but more importantly, they are kind, respectful, and displaying leadership qualities.

I'll take quality humans > grades, any day.

In business, it's working with clients who feel changed by our time together and take personal action as a result.

And, helping women rediscover a version of themselves they thought was lost through life's winding roads.

Christina Venditti, thank you for your explicit trust and for coming undone with me in the studio. I can't wait to see how these images elevate your new branding.

Thank you Cat Ford-Coates for the thought-provoking question this morning and for the motion blur inspiration. Just another creative technique to add to my toolbox.

Expecto Patronum

It's always inspirational when a brave soul shares their story of grit when they are on the other side of their struggles, but what about sharing when we are in the messy middle too?

I’m starting to recognize how that perspective can be even more impactful.

Over the last three years, I’ve openly shared my mindfulness journey, emphasizing that doing the work is never a linear process.

Old programming I once believed about my worthiness has slowly crept back in and resurfaced and I’ve been observing how it's negatively affecting the way I am showing up in my personal and business life.

Mindfulness is not a one-and-done deal.

There’s no finish line.

It’s work that requires daily attention.

It’s a forever kinda thing.

This image below was taken by the talented Cat Ford-Coates, one of my mentors who led a photography workshop I attended in Arizona in early February. This image left me indifferent; the juxtaposition of beauty and ominousness gave me pause.

It reminded me of the scene in Harry Potter when the dementor eerily swoops past its victims for a “kiss” in an attempt to drain their peace and happiness.

If you are at all familiar with the Harry Potter movies, you are aware that in the end, the only person who could save Harry from the dementors was Harry himself.

I can’t think of a more accurate visual depiction of my current state.

So, it’s time.

It's time to save myself.

It’s time to heal once again.

And, it’s time to shine a bright healing light in the darkest of places.

I'm here with you if you are in the messy middle right now.

And, I look forward to celebrating when we are both on the other side

Rise

They've wiped my tears.

They've seen me frustrated.

They've felt my broken heart.

They've observed me checked out.

They've found me wanting to give up.

But, each time they've seen me RISE!

They've watched me work hard for the life I desire.

They've cheered me on while building a business.

They've listened to me celebrate other women.

They've attended powerful campaign parties.

They've held my book and magazines in their hands.

And regardless, they've loved me all the same.

Even when I had a hard time loving myself.

I know I am showing my girls how to be resilient and strong women, while also allowing them to see what it means to be human.

They are my WHY!

Preparing for a Photoshoot: Tips and Tricks to Showcase Your Unique Beauty and Style

It's easy to fall into the big lie of feeling like you're not enough when you're preparing for a photoshoot. You may see pictures of other women I’ve photographed or online in general and wonder why you can't look like them, or you may feel like you have to mimic their poses and expressions to be worthy of a good photo.

I’m here to tell you, that this is utter bullshit.

The truthiest-truth is, you are already enough just as you are. You have your own unique beauty and strength, and a photoshoot is the perfect opportunity to rediscover and celebrate just that.

The first step in preparing for a photoshoot is to remember that it's about YOU, not anyone else. It's not about trying to replicate someone else's style, but more about showcasing your own unique personality and story. So take some time to reflect on who you are and what makes you special. What are your values, interests, and passions? How do YOU want to feel when you look at these images?

Once you have a clear sense of how you want to be documented, you can start thinking about the logistics of the shoot itself.

Here are some tips and tricks to help you prepare:

Choose Your Outfits Thoughtfully

Choosing your outfits is one of the most critical aspects of preparing for a photoshoot. The right clothes can make all the difference in how confident and comfortable you feel during the shoot. Before you decided on an outfit, consider how this outfit makes you feel. We all know that when we show up in an outfit that make us feel amazing, we hold ourselves much differently then when we wear something uncomfortable, ill-fitting, or against your personal style.

When selecting your outfits, choose pieces that flatter your body shape and accentuate your best features. Consider clothes that fit well, are comfortable, and make you feel confident. Avoid clothes that are too tight or too baggy, and opt for clothing that is form-fitting.

It's also essential to select clothing that photographs well. Avoid busy patterns and graphics, as these can distract from your natural beauty. Instead, opt for solid colors or subtle patterns that complement your skin tone and bring out your best features. Additionally, try to choose clothes that have texture or detail, such as lace or embroidery, as this can add interest and depth to your photos.

Shoes or Nah?

Shoes can add value to a photoshoot by enhancing the overall look and style, but their importance depends on the type of shoot and the desired focus. If the emphasis is on the upper body or the shoes do not contribute to the outfit, they may not be imperative.

Undergarments Really Matter
Choosing the right undergarments for a photoshoot can make all the difference in how the clothes look. Firstly, it's essential to consider the type of clothing you'll be wearing and the level of support needed. If the outfit is tight-fitting or sheer, a seamless and form-fitting undergarment can help smooth out any bumps or lines. For strapless or backless clothing, adhesive bras or nipple covers can provide support without visible straps or outlines. The color of the undergarment should also be considered, opting for a nude or skin-toned option when possible to avoid any visible lines or colors under the clothing. Ultimately, selecting the proper undergarments will help the clothes fit better and look their best in the photoshoot.

Accessorize Wisely

Accessories can add personality and flair to your photos, but it's crucial not to overdo it. Select a few statement pieces that complement your outfits without overpowering them. Consider items such as hats, jewelry, scarves, or belts that can add interest and texture to your photos. However, make sure to choose accessories that suit your style and personality, and that aren't too distracting.

Nails Nails Nails

When it comes to selecting a nail polish color for a photoshoot, it's important to consider the overall look you're trying to achieve. Generally, neutral colors are the best choice for nails in a photoshoot, as they won't distract from the subject of the photo and will blend well with different outfit styles and colors.

Neutral colors such as nude, beige, pale pink, light gray, or light mauve can be a great choice as they provide a subtle complement to your skin tone and don't draw too much attention to the nails. However, if you're going for a bold or edgy look, you may opt for a brighter or darker color that suits the mood and theme of the photoshoot.

Ultimately, the key is to choose a nail color that complements the overall style and aesthetic of the photoshoot without taking away from the subject of the photo. Keep in mind that your nails should enhance the overall look, not distract from it, so choose a color that blends seamlessly with the rest of the styling and doesn't draw too much attention.

Get Plenty of Rest

Getting enough rest is crucial to looking and feeling your best on the day of the photoshoot. Aim to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep per night in the days leading up to the shoot. This will help you to feel refreshed and energized, and will prevent you from looking tired or worn out in your photos.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is essential for keeping your skin looking healthy and radiant. Make sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your photoshoot, and bring a water bottle with you on the day of the shoot to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drinking water will help to keep your skin looking plump and hydrated, and will prevent you from looking dehydrated or tired in your photos.

Most importantly,

Have fun and trust the process!

You’ve hired me for a reason. Let me do what I do best and enjoy the ride.

Be YOU!

Be bold.

Be magnetic.

Be courageous.

That is how YOUR clients find YOU.

The goal is not to be for everyone.

In fact, being for everyone is a fast pass to burnout.

When you unapologetically show ALLL the way up, it helps to weed out the people who do not align with your message and vibe and swings open the doors for the people who resonate with you and what you bring to the table.

Inauthenticity is a time waster.

Be YOU!

This girl knows all about living in alignment (in fact, she's the one who taught me).

Top 5 Excuses For Not Booking A Photoshoot

Top 5 Excuses For Not Booking A Photoshoot (DEBUNKED)

I've heard all of the reasons listed and many more for not booking a photoshoot.

Most of the time, these excuses are actually just fear rearing its ugly head.

Fear is a normal and natural emotion.

Your fear is there to protect you when there is danger lurking around the corner.

But in this situation, protection is not needed.

If this is something you desire for yourself, say thank you to your fear for trying to warn you, but that you can handle things from here.

What excuses are holding you back from celebrating yourself?

I'm here when you are ready to tell fear to take several seats.

Qi

Vital energy

"Qi" (chee) is the underlying principle of traditional Chinese medicine and martial arts.

Believers in qi describe it as a vital force or just simply as energy. They believe this energy is imperative for optimal health.

The part I find most interesting about qi is that this cultivated energy is at its strongest when one steps fully into their power and works straight from their truest form.

I don't know about you, but when someone is producing and creating from a place of authenticity-you can feel it.

It's electric.

It's palpable.

It's potent.

It's life-changing.

Often times you can't even explain what it is that you feel.

You just know there's a certain something that creates a spark, energizes you, inspires you, and pushes you to do more by simply being in close proximity to them.

To me, this is what a true leader looks like.

Melissa Vargo, you're a leader.

I am honored that you chose me to document this part of your journey. I've loved getting to know you.

Your qi is so damn strong.

The energy you possess is unworldly.

Your desire to create change, your passion, and your creativity are all awe-inspiring.

But what I love most of all is your abundant mindset and your determination to help others above all else.

This moment changes you

This blessing....it changes you.

And not just physically.

Research shows that "during pregnancy, women undergo significant brain remodeling that persists for at least two years after birth".

This remodeling is said to help women transition into motherhood.

The surge of hormones during his time is said to prune grey matter in the brain while making room for a more keen sense of "theory of mind" (something I was fascinated with when studying for my Masters in Special Edu).

Theory of mind allows you to think about what is going on in someone else’s mind.

So....in this case, we become fricken mind readers in order for us to better predict what our baby will need after they are born.

DANG!

Furthering my point that a woman's body and mind are pretty darn incredible.

The End.

Congratulation to my friends, Colin O'Keefe & Kathy Phan on the arrival of their baby boy just one day after this session.

HMUA: Kamerin Litten

You're a damn warrior

A warrior doesn't just valiantly fight a battle in order to win.

Rather, a true warrior is a leader who carries the guiding light and gracefully shares their knowledge with others, so they too can fight their own unique battle, while gently walking alongside them.

A warrior doesn't replicate what's already out there.

They don't follow the rule book.

Instead, they listen to their soul's inner knowing.

They become their own advocate.

And they act out of their unique perspective.

In turn, they create a new way.

Not for control.

Or for power.

Or monetary gain.

For a warrior, it's about non-discrimination.

It's about seeing everyone as an equal.

It's about respecting their desires.

And always viewing each individual as being worthy.

A warrior doesn't lead in order to serve just one single moment.

Rather, they see the long game.

Causing a ripple effect that touches many.

Many more than they could have ever imagined.

The legacy of their fight gives permission and inspiration to others, so they too can step up and do it in their own way when they're ready.

Because.... all the warrior ever wants in life is for the light to never stop shining, so it can continue to guide others to safety.

Melissa Vargo, you're a damn WARRIOR.

Proud to know you.

Proud to create with you.

Proud of what you have and will continue to do in this world and beyond.

HMUA: Kamerin Litten

I've got you...

Did you know that a portrait session with me includes professional hair and makeup?

When you walk into the studio on the morning of your session, a professional is set up and ready to pamper you.

While this is a treat in itself, let me tell you why this little facet before a session is much more than just glamour.

When a session is approaching, the nerves can often come along with the excitement.

I love the concept of allowing my clients a moment to pause and shake out some of those jitters before starting our time together on the backdrop.

Once clients hang up their outfits and review their lewks with me, they hop up in the makeup chair and we just talk.

We get to know each other more.

We strengthen trust.

We build a rapport.

I do not go to set up my backdrops until I know my client is feeling more comfortable and confident than when they first walked in.

So not only will your skin look flawless and your eyes popping but you will also feel so good about what we are about to create together!

Choose your hard

Choose your hard.

Feeling stuck is hard.

Putting things in motion is hard.

Choose your hard.

Feeling confused is hard.

Asking for help is hard.

Choose your hard.

Feeling like a beginner is hard.

Learning more and leveling up is hard.

Choose your hard.

We always have a choice in how we want to approach life.

What hard will you choose today?

Ashleigh Dopp, this session with you and your niece was absolute perfection.

Thanks for bringing your A-game!
